Hillsborough County families preparing for the upcoming holiday season may face delays if Metropolitan Ministries cannot replace stolen supplies quickly enough. The organization reported a break-in at its West Shore holiday tent site in Tampa that resulted in an estimated $50,000 loss. The incident has disrupted preparations for the annual outreach program that serves the Tampa Bay area.
Officials from Metropolitan Ministries stated that thieves stole aluminum from pipe and drape systems along with several other items. The materials were staged at the West Shore location to support four separate holiday tent events. These events are scheduled to take place in Hillsborough, East Pasco, West Pasco, and Pinellas counties.
The organization serves more than 30,000 Bay Area families and children each year. The theft adds an unexpected financial burden during a critical period when resources are focused on providing holiday meals and Christmas support. A police report has been filed, and the organization is currently cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation.
Dr. Sarah Combs, President and CEO of Metropolitan Ministries, addressed the setback in a statement. She said, "While this is an unexpected setback, our focus remains on the families who are counting on us this holiday season. For 54 years, this community has helped Metro bring hope to our neighbors." Combs invited the public to help the organization replace the materials so the tents can open on schedule.
Metro Ministries is working with vendors to acquire replacement parts. Officials confirmed that the necessary materials are currently available for purchase. The organization aims to open the holiday tents on time to maintain the tradition of providing practical support and care to neighbors in need.
The group is asking the community for financial and volunteer support to cover the unexpected costs. Residents can make a donation online at www.metromin.org/tent or sign up to volunteer for a shift at a holiday tent through www.metromin.org/volunteer. Those interested in hosting a food drive can find details at www.metromin.org/ways-to-give.
